Back Loads and Back Load Blues

Anyone working in the freight industry will appreciate the importance of back loads to their business, but there are still a lot of questions surrounding the practice. Here are a few light-hearted FAQs (and answers) relating to back loads.
Q: Just how important are back loads in haulage?
Well, it depends. If you like the idea of your boss kicking you from one end of the office to the other, then treat back loads as relatively unimportant. Oh yes, once he or she has finished with you, the company accountant will wade-in and deliver the coup de grace. If that sounds like something you'd prefer to miss, better get on the phone pronto!
Q: Surely jobs are priced on a "coming back empty" basis?
Maybe. It depends where the outward leg is going and how confident your pricing experts felt about securing return traffic so they could keep their quote to the customer as low as possible.
If your accountant has started wearing a Stetson, carrying a Derringer and asking you to call him "Beauregard", then it may indicate he's developed Mississippi gambling fever and that he may be cutting the margins fine on his round-trip pricing. Another indication that you'd better take back loads seriously.
